Here's how to internationalize websites at lightning speed with Clonable

Language is a big barrier for entrepreneurs looking to expand internationally, as hiring a translator costs a lot of time AND money. Fortunately, there is now a tool that clones, translates and re-domains your website: Clonable! This is a user-friendly tool that makes it easier for entrepreneurs to cross borders. Tomahawk loves webshops with crossborder growth plans, which is why we started a partnership with Clonable.

Tomahawk is all about tapping into new markets and achieving growth for e-commerce entrepreneurs. We think this tool is going to make that a lot easier! Of course, we tried it ourselves and the results were impressive. So we're happy to tell you how Clonable works.

WHAT IS CLONABLE?

Clonable combines the advantages of multiple AI translation engines plus the ability for administrators to make changes to the copied domain. The tool creates an exact copy of your website. If you change something in the original site, it automatically changes with it in the copy. That's because the clones don't have their own backend; they are linked to your original site.

How does it work in practice?

It's a snap: you choose languages and domains, check that everything is working properly, and then you can put the website live. With a translator, the translation process sometimes takes months, while with Clonable you can go live within 1-3 weeks.

Clonable provides its own online environment where you can make adjustments to cloned websites. In it, you can create rules about what Clonable does or does not need to translate. You would rather prevent the place name 'Bergharen' from changing to 'Mountain hairs'. When converting a Dutch domain to a Belgian domain, Clonable will not change a word like 'jurk' into 'dress', for these nuances you'd better call in an expert. Of course you can create a rule that this happens automatically everywhere.

Clonable's translations are 90-98% correct, depending on the alphabet of the target language. If you have the translation checked for quality and cultural nuances by a native proofreader, you jack up the quality to 98-99%.

Continue to develop

Interesting updates are coming that will make Clonable even better suited to what e-commerce entrepreneurs need:

  • Soon you will be able to translate informal texts into formal texts (or vice versa). It will then be easier to use the right tone of voice to suit the target audience in a specific language area.
  • An update is coming in a few months that will better translate dynamic content.
  • In the future, Clonable will also translate language nuances for some languages, such as translating British 'trainers' to American 'sneakers'. You can then be sure that someone searching for 'sneakers' in the United States won't miss you because your English-language site features the British variant 'trainers.'

Beyond language barriers

Clonable offers a good and fast solution that can help web shops expand into new language areas. At Tomahawk, we think this is a cool development. We are curious to see how this plays out for the e-commerce toppers we love so much!
