Tomahawk Blog

Give me 5 minutes and you'll know what you got from me (a content marketer)

"Nina, you do something with texts, don't you?" I often hear this statement from people who know me less well and/or are less familiar with content marketing. "That's right," I regularly hear myself say to make myself comfortable. But actually, it is only partially true and I sell my profession short with this simple answer. Therefore, in this blog, in 5 minutes, I explain what I do as a content marketer all day long. Also useful for you, potential new client, reading my blog right now because you are curious what I can do for you. I notice that clients are also sometimes searching which tasks belong to a content marketer.

More than a 'staring contest'

Good content (including texts, videos, social media posts) is not created by just having a "staring contest" with my monitor. Inspiration and creativity are important parts of my work. And let those be the very things that can't always be forced. A creative idea for a campaign arises at the most unexpected moments and places. Not always in the office behind my laptop. In my case, it's during a festival, a road trip, in the shower, in the pub during conversations with friends. You can help inspiration and creativity by keeping your eyes and ears open. For example, I regularly take a different route to work, often by bike, but also regularly on foot. It's that moment of rest before the craziness of the day sets in, where I like to look around and be inspired by the people, city and nature around me.

Never a dull moment

Once in the office it's a mad dash where we work hard with our funny and sometimes chaotic team. Because I work at an agency for different clients, no one day is the same. Of course, I too have my regular duties, but unlike a content marketer who works for one specific company or organization, at an agency you work on different campaigns for a wide variety of products and services. That makes the work nice and challenging, but it also means that you have to have a broad area of interest. Moreover, you also need to have a good understanding of where to get information that is relevant to your client.

Know what others are saying about you

My workday invariably begins with a cup of coffee and checking our social media channels and those of our clients. I answer questions, respond to comments and check likes, retweets and the like. Of course, we don't lose track of the monitoring tools during the rest of the day so we can respond to questions in a timely manner. Furthermore, I also receive a daily email with Google Alerts. I have compiled a list of alerts that keeps me up-to-date on what is being written about us and our clients. And regularly I also get inspiration for new content this way. Although in my private life I have learned to worry less about what others think of me, in my field it is very important what others say about you, in this case the company.

Heavy fare in the morning

Because I find that I am at my sharpest in the morning, I prefer to use this time for the more challenging jobs that require all my attention. I prefer to save answering emails, for example, until the end of the day. In the morning, I prefer to focus on thinking out and drafting a content strategy or a content calendar for a client. The mail notifications go on silent, Spotify on and bang on. In between, I also consult with various online specialists to make sure that all aspects fit together seamlessly before we present a strategy to a client. Such a strategy and calendar don't happen overnight.

From strategy to text

As a content marketer, I am also involved in a piece of implementing the proposed strategies. So this includes creating the actual content and making sure it is distributed through the right channels. I also prefer to perform these types of tasks in the morning to make the most of my fitness. It's efficient work and delivers the best results for the client, so it's win-win!

Round Nijmegen or chilling in the (wo)men cave

Around 12:30, it's time for a break. A break from the computer screen. Because our building is located in the city center, a tour of Nijmegen with colleagues is a must, weather permitting. But even when the weather is bad, we don't have to get bored during the break. At Isatis they have thought of everything. We have a real (wo)men cave, also known as our game corner. After the break, I am recharged for the second half of my working day.

Results-driven

I reserve the afternoon for team meetings in which we talk about the results achieved. Which efforts led to successes and where do we need to step up a gear? Based on these findings, we prepare reports together for clients so that they too know exactly what they are paying us for. We communicate the results achieved not only by e-mail to our clients, but we also have regular telephone or face-to-face meetings.

Making the brain crackle nicely

In addition to results meetings, my afternoon is often reserved for brainstorming sessions with our brand strategist. In a relaxed atmosphere (in one of our "living room" meeting rooms) with a good cup of coffee, we engage in a conversation about branding issues for various clients. What is the identity of a particular client/brand? What does the client want to project? What expressions and communication styles fit this? These meetings form the basis for our branding and content strategies.

"One team one task"

At Tomahawk, we as a team are responsible for ensuring that not only existing customers are satisfied and stay satisfied, but that new customers come in as well. Therefore, in addition to our usual work, we perform scans together. Together, we analyze the site and write our recommendations. As a team, we then present our findings to potential customers. Again, just one of the many tasks on my afternoon schedule.

Something with text and more

Quite a job, if I do say so myself ;). So, "Yes I do indeed do something with text", but as you have read, also a lot more. So are you that potential client I mentioned in the introduction? Then send me an email. I would love to talk to you, tell you more about my profession and more importantly, how I am going to use my knowledge for your e-commerce website. And if you like this position, please send me your resume and cover letter. We are always looking for new talent.

Working together?
